This animal is in the arachnid family (spiders). Their tail has a stinger that they use to subdue their prey and for defense. Scorpions are very common in Nevada. There are 23 species found in Nevada, but only one of them is considered a serious threat to man and his pets, it is called the bark scorpion. The Bark Scorpion has established itself in various locations of Clark county and spotty locations of Las Vegas.
Scorpions hide during the day under debris, and rocks, and come out to feed during the nighttime. If they get into your home they can be a very serious threat to the occupants during the day and night as things are moved or disturbed where the scorpion maybe hiding. Scorpions can invade a home when the doors or windows are left open, but may come in on moving boxes, or stored items in the garage.
Scorpions can climb up walls and hide behind hanging pictures, and then after dark come down from the walls and become a problem for the occupants of the house. They climb trees outside and can be knocked off a limb or foliage by simply brushing up against it. If a person is stung by a bark scorpion immediate medical attention is strongly advised.
Small children, older adults, or someone with a weak immune system may require hospitalization if they are stung. Control of scorpions can include the removal of debris such as piles of lumber, old accumulation of stored items in the yard, and general applications around the foundation and foliage outside with a pesticide that is labeled for the control of scorpions. There are only a few products that truly maintain a good barrier for the scorpion populations. It is recommended to have a professional pest control person that is familiar with scorpion control to help you.
